1. Childbirth Education – In an effort to dismiss any fears or myths regarding pregnancy, this class is divided into a focus on “Stages of Pregnancy” and “Stages of Labor”. This class provides educational information on these topics as it relates to both the pregnant mother and her baby growing inside of her. Taught in lecture or group style format and using the pregnant woman’s trimesters as a guide, this class educates our pregnant women on the many physical, mental, and emotional changes taking place inside her body as well as for her soon to arrive newborn baby. *Note: due to the large amount of education presented on this topic, this class is 1.5 hrs. in length.
2. Breastfeeding – Presented in a half teaching/hand on practice format, this class exposes women to all aspects of breastfeeding, teaching: benefits, how to, how long, and offering lactation consultant resources if needed. The hands-on practice with babies will allow the pregnant and recently postpartum woman to practice different ways to hold her baby when breastfeeding, offering real-life examples of how to be successful in breastfeeding one’s baby. *Note: all women signed up for this class should get a doll baby to practice with at home when the hands-on practice is presented in the class.
3. Pregnancy/Breastfeeding Nutrition & Exercise – Presented in a hybrid lecture/group format, this class educates both pregnant and postpartum women on how to eat healthily while pregnant and while breastfeeding their baby once he/she arrives. All women will receive information on how to eat healthy while on a budget, along with education on the importance of physical exercise during pregnancy. Multiple forms of physical exercise will be presented: from yoga and walking to cycling and swimming.
4. Car Seat Safety – This course will inform all pregnant and postpartum women of the importance of having a proper car seat based upon their baby’s stage of life. Women will learn safety tips as it relates to putting their infant in a car seat when they are first born, up till they are in a convertible car seat as a toddler. With video presentation of car safety materials, all participants will receive a car seat for their infant following demonstration of understanding of the material presented.
5. Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR – As many pregnant women fear what to do if their baby stops breathing or is choking, this class offers all pregnant and postpartum women the opportunity to be certified in BLS/CPR, so they can feel prepared and ready to help their baby should they choke or stop breathing suddenly. Partnering with the American Heart Association and/or American Red Cross, trained educators will impart the required knowledge into all participants, followed by each woman performing a skills check-off to obtain her certification. All certifications will last for 2 years.
6. Financial Management – As one’s financial responsibilities drastically increase from the time a woman finds out she is pregnant up till and including her baby’s delivery and future life as a mother, this class equips all pregnant and postpartum women with tools to be financially successful. Providing information on how to effectively budget, tips on where to buy baby food and clothing at cost-efficient rates, and knowledge on how to apply/access government forms of support (Pregnancy Medicaid, WIC, food stamps), this class helps women learn the financial management skills needed to navigate this new season in her life.
